Tony Cragg installs three monumental sculptures in Rome's historic squares

exhibition · 2026-04-26

British sculptor Tony Cragg has placed three monumental bronze works in two central Roman piazzas as part of the Roma Contemporanea initiative. The sculptures—Versus (2011), Runner (2015), and Stuck (2019)—will remain on view until January 31, 2025. Runner and Versus occupy Piazza San Silvestro, while Stuck stands in Piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina. Curated by Sergio Risaliti and Stéphane Verger, the project is promoted by the Municipio I cultural department, transforming historic sites into open-air galleries. The works contrast with classical architecture through their biomorphic forms and varied patinas: Stuck retains a brown bronze tone, Runner a green copper oxide, and Versus a bright orange. Cragg, born in Liverpool in 1949, is known for experimenting with materials and techniques since the 1970s, now using new technologies to create gravity-defying forms. The exhibition follows his earlier Roman show at the Baths of Diocletian. Rome's culture councillor Giulia Ghia stated the initiative invites reflection on art's ability to revitalize urban spaces and makes contemporary art accessible to non-museum audiences.
