Tomaso Binga's Feminist Wordplay at Fondazione Studio Carrieri Noesi

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Fondazione Studio Carrieri Noesi in Martina Franca presents a survey of Tomaso Binga, the male pseudonym of Bianca Pucciarelli Menna, who since the 1960s has used language to challenge gender norms. The exhibition includes subliminal writings, mailing art, and recent works from the cycle 'Per gli Involontari di Guerra,' as well as sound poetry performances such as 'Ti Scrivo solo di Domenica' (1977), 'Oplà' (1991), 'America è la Terra' (1992), 'La Storia' (1993), and 'La Dieta' (1994). A highlight is 'Riflessioni a puntate' (1991), a series of twelve postcards sent monthly to 280 recipients worldwide, protesting the Gulf War. The show also features the 'Alfabeto Officinale' (1981), a feminist alphabet where the body becomes living sign. Since 2014, Binga has updated her corporeal alphabet with digital signs.
