Tomas Saraceno's Aerocene project expands with London campus and open call

artist · 2026-05-05

Tomas Saraceno's Aerocene project, previously presented at the Grand Palais in Paris, has reached a new participatory phase. On a recent Saturday, the Royal College of Art in London hosted the Aerocene Campus, a day of debates and experiments on ecological urgencies, involving institutions such as the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Serpentine Gallery, and the Goethe Institut. This was the first such event since the project's inception. Saraceno aims to create a zero-emission sculpture capable of traveling around the world. An open call invites participation in the Aerocene Explorer, a beta-stage experimental kit that allows anyone to launch their own solar-powered sculpture, collecting atmospheric data, photos, and videos. Participants can hack the kit and share data on the open-source platform. The Aerocene Explorer Movie will be a collective effort documenting experiences in one-minute videos.
