Tom Otterness's Sculpture Installation at Beverly Hills City Hall Explores Money, Labor, and Gender

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From November 15, 2005 to April 30, 2006, Tom Otterness installed eight bronze sculptures on the west lawn of Beverly Hills City Hall at 450 N. Crescent Dr. The outdoor exhibition featured works like King and Queen (1997), Tree of Knowledge (1997), and Free Money (2001), with figures reaching up to 25 feet high. Otterness's cartoonish, figurative style references 1950s animation while addressing themes of entrepreneurship, American justice, and capitalism. The sculptures incorporate money bags as heads and depict aristocrats in formal attire alongside working-class figures in hard hats. Narrative details include a pipe-smoking woman driving a Large Covered Wagon with children fighting inside, and two men kissing behind the 71-inch-tall Big Big Penny. The installation's green patina from Los Angeles weather did not diminish its visual impact, and pieces were arranged spaciously across the lawn, harmonizing with the Mission-style architecture. Accessible to pedestrians and drivers along Santa Monica Blvd and Crescent Drive, the exhibition offered a placard map for viewing. Otterness's work blends celebratory populism with subtle critiques of labor, gender norms, and family structures, using whimsical forms to explore complex social themes.
