Tom Hanks's Typewriter Collection on View at The Church in Sag Harbor
A selection of 35 typewriters from Tom Hanks's collection of over 300 is on display at The Church, a deconsecrated 19th-century Methodist church in Sag Harbor, Long Island, through March 10, 2025. Curated by Simon Doonan, the exhibition titled "Some of Tom’s Typewriters" includes a red Olivetti Valentine (1969) designed by Ettore Sottsass and an electric model from the set of Mad Men. Hanks's obsession began with a Hermes 3000 by Paillard-Bolex; he now travels with a typewriter and writes daily. Doonan, known for curating The Warhol Look at the Whitney Museum and designing White House Christmas decorations for Obama, aims to highlight the engineering and social history of typewriters, calling their sound "the soundtrack of the 20th century." The exhibition features vintage posters and colorful office-like staging. The Church, founded by artists Eric Fischl and April Gornik and run by Edge and Center (director Sheri Pasquarella), serves as an exhibition space, artist residency, and creative center with a public garden and Wi-Fi, offering workshops in monotype printing and weaving.
