Tolfa's Community Creates a Participatory Photo Archive

In Tolfa, a small town near Rome with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, the community has launched Archivio Paese, a project to build a shared photographic archive. The initiative collects, digitizes, and catalogs vernacular photographs from private family albums, aiming to create a collective narrative of local memory. The core of the archive is the Giovanni Padroni collection, donated to the Chirone association and housed at the Polo Culturale di Tolfa, which also contains the Archaeological Museum, library, historical archive, and restoration lab. Funded by the European Union's NextGenerationEU, the Italian Ministry of Culture, and the Municipality of Tolfa, the project is artistically directed by Valentina Vannicola and Alessandro Toscano. It involves citizens, associations, and cultural institutions in a structured process of memory emergence. A digital "memory bank" platform will make materials accessible and support public cultural practices. Activities include research, digitization, archival cataloging, training, school workshops, and public events. Educational programs focus on engaging younger generations with memory and community change. Public restitution events—meetings, exhibitions, publications—reactivate the collected heritage, generating new narratives and a contemporary relationship with memory.
