Tolentino Biennial of Humor Turns 30 with Hate Theme

The 30th edition of the Biennale internazionale dell’Umorismo nell’Arte in Tolentino, Italy, runs from November 20 to 23, 2019. Founded by doctor and caricaturist Luigi Mari, the competition features 239 artists from 46 countries exploring the theme of hatred through satire. Accompanying exhibitions include 'Fellini e la Biennale' for the director's centenary and a portrait of Norberto Bobbio by photographer Maurizio Galimberti. Special prizes go to Lercio.it and Terzo segreto di satira, while Iginio Straffi of Rainbow receives the career award. The parallel festival Biumor, a philosophy of humor event co-organized with Popsophia, returns to Tolentino in autumn for the first time, moving from Castello della Rancia to venues like Teatro Vaccaj. Biumor director Lucrezia Ercoli frames the hate theme as a response to online hate speech, trolls, and cyberbullying. Guests include Andrea Colamedici and Maura Gancitano of Tlon, presenting their anti-hate speech campaign 'Odiare ti costa', plus musical-philosophical productions by Popsophia featuring Saverio Marconi and Carlo Massarini.
