Tokyo's Yamanote Line Gets a Metaverse Station

digital · 2026-04-27

JR East, JR East Japan Planning Corporation, and HIKKY Co. Ltd have launched Shin Akihabara Station, the 31st station of Tokyo's Yamanote Line, entirely within the metaverse. The virtual station is part of the Virtual AKIBA World initiative and the broader Beyond Stations Concept by JR East. Located in a digital replica of Akihabara—known for its electronics, manga, anime, and video game shops—the metaverse station allows users to explore reproductions of physical locations, interact with others, and make purchases. Items bought can be picked up from lockers at the real-world Akihabara Station in Tokyo. The project was announced in April 2022.
