Tokugawa Ieyasu: From Hostage to Shogun of a Unified Japan
Tokugawa Ieyasu, the third great unifier of Japan, rose from a child hostage to absolute ruler by combining patience, strategic alliances, and military prowess. Born in 1543 at Okazaki Castle in Mikawa (modern-day Aichi Prefecture), he was sent as a hostage to the Oda and Imagawa clans. In 1560, he allied with Oda Nobunaga and led the initial attack at the Battle of Okehazama against Imagawa Yoshimoto. Serving Nobunaga cost him his wife Tsukiyama Gozen and son Nobuyasu, who were executed in 1579 on Nobunaga's orders. After Nobunaga's assassination in 1582, Ieyasu switched allegiance to Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In 1590, he was relocated to the Kanto region, where he built Edo Castle (future Tokyo). Following Hideyoshi's death in 1598, Ieyasu manipulated the regency system and defeated Ishida Mitsunari's Western Army at the Battle of Sekigahara on October 21, 1600. He was appointed shogun in 1603 and eliminated the Toyotomi clan in the Siege of Osaka (1614–1615). His post-war policies secured Tokugawa rule for over 250 years until the Meiji Restoration of 1868.
