Toilet Paper and Beyeler Bring Maze of Quotes to Art Basel Miami Beach
The Fondazione Beyeler of Basel has landed at Art Basel Miami Beach with Maze of Quotes, a project by Toilet Paper magazine, the participatory publication founded by Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari. Created in collaboration with Italian design brands Gufram and Seletti, the installation transforms the foundation's booth into three sections covered in wallpaper and furnished to evoke a "fantastic, luxurious, consumerist, and sexual atmosphere with candlesticks and toilets, gold drapes and tin cans." The maze begins with a quote from The Sopranos, where Tony says, "You think it's easy being the boss?" The project follows the Super Ball Gala held in Switzerland during Art Basel, reuniting the Cattelan-Ferrari-Beyeler trio in Florida. Francesco Bonami wrote that under Toilet Paper, Cattelan and Ferrari "have renounced the stability of their roles to embark on the creation of a completely new grammar," making viewers think of John Cage's aphorism: "Going to the North Pole? Take Miró with you." Toilet Paper has become a global brand, appearing at events from the Venice Biennale to Art Basel Miami Beach with parties and new proposals. It is a fixture in museum bookshops including MoMA in New York and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. In 2016, it presented a pop-up store in Milan, following similar ones in 2015 at Paul Smith stores in Nottingham and Leeds, and at Galeries Lafayette in Paris.
