Tobias Rehberger's 24 Stops: A Path of Art and Design at the Swiss-German Border

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Tobias Rehberger has created '24 Stops', a site-specific installation along a five-kilometer path through fields and vineyards near Riehen, Switzerland, at the border with Germany. The project is a collaboration between Fondation Beyeler and Vitra, with Swatch as the sponsor. The path features 24 artworks including beehives, bells, bird shelters, belvederes, telescopes, murals, and signage, all in vibrant colors. One section is named after designer Verner Panton. The 25th work is a Swatch pop-up store located at the former customs house in no-man's-land between Germany and Switzerland, selling a limited-edition watch designed by Rehberger with two hands of equal length. At the opening, customs officers distributed beer, apples, and pretzels. The path is best explored on foot or by bicycle. The adjacent open-air spa, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and opened in 2014, is a municipal facility with an entry fee of just 4 Swiss francs, reflecting the wealth of Riehen, one of Switzerland's richest municipalities. The project was presented at a press conference with Rehberger, Fondation Beyeler director Samuel Keller, and Swatch creative director Carlo Giordanetti.
