Tobias Madison's Red-Foiled Exhibition at Kestnergesellschaft Blurs Art and Reality
Swiss artist Tobias Madison has reimagined the Kestnergesellschaft in Hanover by draping all its windows in red foil for his exhibition titled 'das blut, im fruchtfleisch gerinnend beim birnenbiss' (blood congealing in the flesh of a bitten pear), which runs from 6 February to 24 April 2016. This installation produces a soft red glow that critiques the insularity of the art world. Madison showcased four square paintings depicting red window panes, revealed hidden delivery zones, and included pallets filled with sandbags. A central feature of the exhibition was a ghost train facade that alluded to the white cube. The event concluded with a 2016 video, a DIY reinterpretation of Shūji Terayama's 'Emperor Tomato Ketchup' (1971), focusing on educational critiques. Madison explores art's relevance beyond gallery confines through intentional staging and historical references.
