institutional · 2026-04-27

Tiziana D'Angelo, a 38-year-old archaeologist, has taken office as the new director of the Parco Archeologico di Paestum e Velia. Selected from an international pool of candidates in January 2022, she will lead the two Magna Graecia sites in the province of Salerno for four years. D'Angelo succeeds Gabriel Zuchtriegel, who moved to Pompeii in 2021, and Massimo Osanna, who served as interim director. Born in Milan in 1983, D'Angelo holds a degree in Classical and Oriental Antiquities from Collegio Ghislieri in Pavia, a specialization from Oxford, and a PhD in Classical Archaeology from Harvard, where she studied painted tombs of southern Italy. She has taught at Cambridge and Nottingham, and worked at the Harvard Art Museums, the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut in Berlin, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Her priorities include enhancing Velia's archaeological and environmental uniqueness, using advanced monitoring technologies, creating new exhibition spaces, and developing sustainable tourism itineraries in collaboration with local and international partners.
