Titus Schade's Plateau exhibition at Leipzig museum features paintings and theatrical set

exhibition · 2026-04-20

From June 29 to August 26, 2018, Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig showcases Titus Schade's exhibition, Plateau, which includes 15 paintings created between 2011 and 2018, alongside a full-scale stage set. This set, initially crafted with Marialena Lapata for Elfriede Jelinek's 1988 play Wolken.Heim, reimagines Schade's 2012 artwork, Der Kiosk, into a three-dimensional environment. Schade's art delves into the complexities of German national identity, utilizing hyperreal imagery of cottages and windmills. Significant works such as Die große Kultstätte (2012) and Regal Bauhaus (2011) challenge traditional pictorial space. The exhibition's dramatic lighting enhances its theatricality, echoing Jelinek's philosophical ideas and portraying German identity as fluid through recurring motifs, while omitting human figures.
