Titian to Van Dyck: Portrait Masterpieces from Venetian Renaissance to Baroque in Treviso

exhibition · 2026-05-04

A major exhibition titled "Da Tiziano a van Dyck. Il volto del ‘500" will open on September 26 at Casa dei Carraresi in Treviso, exploring Venetian painting from the Bellini tradition through the Giorgione revolution via the portrait genre. Curated by Ettore Merkel with Ileana Chiappini di Sorio, Giuliana Ericani, and Alejandro del Pozo, the show features 50 works from the Giuseppe Alessandra collection. It is divided into six sections, tracing Venetian painting from the late 15th to the late 16th century, from Giovanni Bellini to the late Titian, alongside major figures like Giorgione and Tintoretto, as well as works from their workshops (Sebastiano del Piombo, Palma il Giovane, Lodovico Pozzoserrato). Highlights include Titian's "Ritratto di Ottavio Farnese" (1545-46), and in the Baroque section, Hans von Aachen's "Ritratto di Gentiluomo" and Antoon van Dyck's "Testa di Carattere".
