Titian's Assumption Gets $500K Restoration for 500th Anniversary
Titian's Assumption of the Virgin, the world's largest panel painting at nearly 7 meters tall, will receive a €500,000 restoration funded by Save Venice for its 500th anniversary. The work, composed of 22 poplar panels and housed in an Istrian stone frame attributed to Lorenzo and Giambattista Bregno, was unveiled on May 19, 1518, at the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice. The restoration, supported by Beatrice de Santo Domingo and the Jasmine Charity Trust in honor of Regina Jaglom Wachter, will address woodworm infestation, clean the surface and stone frame, remove non-original paint residues, and install a monitoring device. Save Venice president Frederick Ilchman called the project a milestone for conservation. The Franciscan community will host an open day on May 19, 2018, with free guided tours in Italian, English, and German.
