Titanic returns to Italian cinemas for 25th anniversary

James Cameron's Titanic, winner of 11 Academy Awards, returns to Italian cinemas from February 9, 2023, distributed by The Walt Disney Company Italia, to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The film launched the careers of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. In a global press conference, Cameron and producer Jon Landau discussed the film's origins and legacy. Cameron became interested in the Titanic after working with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on robotics for The Abyss, meeting Robert Ballard, and watching the 1958 film A Night to Remember. He pitched the idea to 20th Century Fox as 'Romeo and Juliet on the Titanic.' Cameron noted that the film's length was initially seen as a risk by Hollywood but proved commercially successful. He reflected on the enduring mythic quality of the Titanic tragedy, attributing it to themes of love, sacrifice, mortality, and human arrogance. Asked what he would change if making the film today, Cameron said the emotional core and script would remain the same, but technology like CGI would reduce the need for built sets, and the production in Rosarito, Mexico, 3,000 kilometers from studios, would not be repeated.
