Tirana's Art Scene: New Spaces Amidst Museum Crisis

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

Tirana's cultural scene presents a contrast: while the National Gallery and the National History Museum are either closed or require renovations, three new art venues have emerged. The National Gallery shut its doors in October 2021 for an expansion project, increasing its size from 4,500 to 10,000 square meters at a cost of 1 billion lek (approximately €8 million). The National History Museum, which opened 40 years ago, has yet to undergo any upgrades. New establishments include Harabel, which has launched an exhibition space on Rruga Ibrahim Rugova, and Destil, a co-working hub for the Bulevard Art and Media Institute. Additionally, the Municipality has introduced GAT (Galleria d'Arte di Tirana). Existing venues comprise COD, House of Leaves, Bunk'Art, Zeta Contemporary, Bazament Art Space, and FAB.
