Tirana Launches International Contemporary Dance Festival

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

Tirana has inaugurated the International Contemporary Dance Festival (ICDF), a new event aimed at showcasing Albanian-born choreographers who have achieved international success. The festival was conceived by Tim Newton of French production company D18 and Ajola Xoxa, director of the contemporary art platform Harabel, with Angelin Preljocaj as artistic director. The debut edition featured Preljocaj's Ballet Preljocaj performing Winterreise, inspired by Schubert's Lieder cycle. Other performances included Blenard Azizaj's The Great Migration, Gentian Duda's version of Peter and the Wolf, and Eno Peçi's Opus nr. 25. The festival seeks to counter stereotypes about Albania and promote its cultural dynamism, coinciding with Tirana's designation as European Youth Capital 2022.
