Tintoretto's 'Deposizione' on View at Milan's Museo Diocesano

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Museo Diocesano in Milan presents Tintoretto's 'Deposizione' (Deposition) for Lent 2025, a painting recently rediscovered after years of neglect. The work, on loan from the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, was commissioned around 1562 for the church of Santa Maria dell'Umiltà alle Zattere in Venice. After Napoleonic spoliations, it entered the Gallerie by 1821 but deteriorated due to poor pigment quality, leading to critical obscurity until a 2008-2009 restoration restored its splendor. The exhibition also features contemporary reinterpretations by Jacopo Benassi, Luca Bertolo, Alberto Gianfreda, and Maria Elisabetta Novello, in collaboration with Casa Testori. The painting depicts the Deposition without movement, resembling a Pietà, with a theatrical composition and Michelangelesque monumentality. Tintoretto, born Jacopo Robusti (1519-1594), was called 'the most terrible brain that painting has ever had' by Giorgio Vasari, reflecting his fiery temperament and dramatic style that unsettled Titian.
