Tinker imagineers wins SBID Award 2015 for Juliana Children's Hospital design

award · 2026-05-05

The Juliana Children's Hospital in The Hague, Netherlands, designed by Tinker imagineers from Utrecht, won the overall SBID International Design Excellence Award 2015. The project transforms the pediatric hospital into a fairy-tale environment using experience design, storytelling, and interaction design. Five fantasy characters—Hugg, Happy, Fold, C-bot, and Vizzle—appear on walls, video projections, and interactive scenarios throughout waiting rooms and pre-operative spaces, distracting young patients from medical equipment and their illness. The design balances strict medical and safety regulations with creative input, as noted by Vanessa Brady, president of the Society of British and International Design. The award ceremony took place in late November 2015 at the Dorchester Hotel in London. The client was Hagaziekenhuis and Ronald McDonald Huis. Animations were by Dugour Productions, and photographs by Fred Ernst and Michael van Oosten.
