Timeless Gazes: Ancient Egypt Meets Contemporary Africa at Villa Empain

exhibition · 2026-04-23

At Villa Empain in Belgium, the Boghossian Foundation and Fondation Gandur pour l'Art are showcasing 'Timeless Gazes: From Pharaohs to the Present Day.' This exhibition displays approximately 130 pieces from Jean Claude Gandur's extensive collection, which consists of more than 1,000 Mediterranean antiquities, predominantly from Egypt. It features bronzes, reliefs, and stelae that are over 2,000 years old, arranged around eight themes that delve into the concepts of gaze and environment. Among the artifacts is a red granite bust of Ramses II dating back to the second millennium BC, along with over 40 contemporary works by African artists. Curators Xavier Droux, Olivia Fahmy, and Aurélie Quirion aim to foster a dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures.
