Tim Burton directed the first season of 'Wednesday', a Netflix series launched on November 23, 2022, with Alfred Gough and Miles Millar as showrunners. The show reimagines the Addams Family, created by Charles Addams in 1938, focusing on the iconic daughter Wednesday. Burton stated he always felt a connection to Wednesday, sharing her black-and-white worldview. The series places Wednesday as a high school student at Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts, after multiple expulsions. Burton emphasized the theme of outsiders, contrasting Wednesday's analog interests (typewriter, cello) with her peers' obsession with Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat. Jenna Ortega stars as Wednesday, with Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia and Luis Guzmán as Gomez. Burton noted that without Ortega, there would be no series. The character of Thing, initially a timid head-and-arms figure in the original comics, is depicted as a weathered hand, described by Burton as 'the Dustin Hoffman of hands'. Danny Elfman composed the music, and Colleen Atwood designed costumes, giving Wednesday varied looks while distinguishing her from other students. The European premiere took place at Teatro del Giglio in Lucca, with Burton and Lucca Comics&Games director Emanuele Vietina.
