Tillmans and Koolhaas launch open call to rebrand the European Union

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

In 2016, German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans created an advertising campaign to counter Brexit and encourage Britons to vote to remain in the EU. The referendum resulted in the UK's departure, leaving the EU with 27 member states. Two years later, Tillmans, along with architect Rem Koolhaas and architecture historian Stephan Petermann, launched an open call for artists and creatives to propose a new communication campaign for the EU, aiming to effectively convey the concept of unity. The call is part of the European Culture Forum, held in Amsterdam from May 31 to June 3, 2018, under the theme "Act for Democrazy!" which seeks to counter nationalism and extremism. Participants are invited to submit drafts, drawings, photos, poems, words, and short film scripts that contribute to a better communication campaign for Europe. Tillmans expressed hope that the Forum would channel individual efforts into a broader movement, envisioning a massive counter-movement against right-wing populism. Proposals must be sent in PDF format by April 18, 2018, to be considered by a jury chaired by Koolhaas and Tillmans.
