Tilda Swinton and Olivier Saillard to Perform 'Embodying Pasolini' in Rome

other · 2026-04-27

On June 25, 2021, at Mattatoio in Rome, actress Tilda Swinton and fashion curator Olivier Saillard will premiere their performance 'Embodying Pasolini'. The event, part of the Romaison project curated by Clara Tosi Pamphili and promoted by the Comune di Roma, anticipates the centenary of Pier Paolo Pasolini's birth. The performance draws on costumes designed by Danilo Donati for Pasolini's films, including 'The Gospel According to St. Matthew', 'Hawks and Sparrows', 'Oedipus Rex', 'Pigsty', 'The Decameron', 'The Canterbury Tales', 'Arabian Nights', and 'Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom'. These costumes, made and preserved by Sartoria Farani, have never been shown since filming. Swinton will try on the costumes, exploring their materiality and memory, evoking the absence of the actors' bodies. Saillard describes the action as 'telling in the holes and voids of a sleeve what a dialogue, an exchange of actors, a scene was'. The performance will be livestreamed from 6 to 10 PM on www.romaison.it, with limited in-person attendance by reservation. Swinton and Saillard have previously collaborated on 'The Impossible Wardrobe', 'Eternity Dress', and 'Cloakroom', but this is their first engagement with cinematic costume.
