Tibor de Nagy Gallery Presents Jane Street Gallery Retrospective and Jean Hélion Works
Between June 12 and July 25, 2003, the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York presented two exhibitions: 'Jean Hélion: Selected Works' and 'The Jane Street Gallery: Celebrating New York's First Artist Cooperative.' The Jane Street Gallery, which operated from 1943 to 1949, was New York's inaugural artist cooperative and included notable figures such as Leland Bell (1922-1991), Nell Blaine (1922-1996), and Larry Rivers (1923-2002). The exhibition showcased twenty pieces, featuring Bell's 'Abstraction (II)' (1942-45) and Blaine's 'Abstraction' (1948). In a more intimate setting, ten works by Jean Hélion (1937-1951) were exhibited. Curator Jennifer Samet highlighted Clement Greenberg's 1947 commendation of the artists, noting that only Rivers gained significant recognition later. Kresch, the last surviving member, reminisced about their goal to 'interrogate reality.'
