Thyssen Museum Launches Sign Language Glossary for Art Terms

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-05

The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, with support from Bankinter and the CNSE Foundation, has created a glossary of 255 art and museum terms in Spanish Sign Language (LSE). The project began in 2024 to address the lack of specific vocabulary for the deaf community. Terms include techniques (watercolor, canvas, trompe-l'oeil), artist names (Duccio to O'Keeffe), movements (Cubism, Dadaism, Hyperrealism), and museum-related concepts. Each entry includes a video, image, and description validated in easy reading with the AMÁS Foundation. The glossary is available on the museum's website and integrated into the Dictionary of Spanish Sign Language.
