Thurston Moore: Sonic Youth icon on art, music, and new projects

Thurston Moore, co-founder of Sonic Youth, discusses his definition of art and music, his favorite visual artwork (Picasso's 'The Three Musicians'), and his recent projects including composing for the HBO series 'Irma Vep: The Serial' and writing his memoir 'Sonic Life' (2023). Born in Coral Gables in 1958, Moore is a guitarist, singer, producer, poet, and writer. Sonic Youth, active from 1981 to 2011, included Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo, and Steve Shelley. The band's 2006 album 'Daydream Nation' was added to the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress. Moore has collaborated with Yoko Ono, John Zorn, David Toop, Cecil Taylor, Lydia Lunch, Stephen O'Malley, and Irmin Schmidt. In 2018, he presented a symphony for twelve guitars at the Barbican Centre in London. He teaches at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen and the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University. His instrumental album 'Screen Time' was released in February 2022 on Southern Lord. Moore is currently touring Italy, with dates in Galzignano Terme (July 20) and Genoa (July 21).
