Three Women Artists Selected for Korean Pavilion at 2019 Venice Biennale
Hyunjin Kim, chosen by Arts Council Korea to curate the Korean Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale, has announced the participation of three women artists: Hwayeon Nam, Siren Eun Young Jung, and Jane Jin Kaisen. Their projects will center on women and gender-diversified narratives that disrupt and reconstruct previous understandings of modernization in East Asia. Kim's proposal was selected for its potential to deconstruct dominant ideological narratives and highlight regional history through universal themes like tradition versus modernity, gender, and sexuality. Hwayeon Nam, based in Berlin and Seoul, creates multimedia installations examining social systems. Jane Jin Kaisen, a filmmaker and artist living in Berlin, focuses on narrative-based work exploring transnational identities and histories. Siren Eun Young Jung, winner of the 2018 Korea Artist Prize, traces forgotten narratives around the Korean all-female theatre genre Yeoseong Gukgeuk, exploring queer artistic practices and identity politics; her work is currently on show at MMCA Seoul. The announcement was made on 14 September 2018.
