Three VR apps for immersive art experiences

digital · 2026-04-27

Three virtual reality applications offer immersive encounters with art history, from prehistoric cave paintings to Renaissance masterpieces. The Chauvet Cave VR experience, developed by AtlasV and Novelab, allows users to explore a 3D reconstruction of the prehistoric site, featuring 36,000-year-old paintings that inspired Werner Herzog's documentary. The app is free and compatible with HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. "1, 2, 3… BRUEGEL!" by Lucid Realities Studio is an interactive game set in Pieter Bruegel the Elder's painting of children playing, blending 2D and 3D graphics for a dynamic experience. It costs €2.39 and works on Valve Index, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift. "Mona Lisa: Beyond the Glass" was developed by the Louvre Museum in collaboration with Emissive for the recent Leonardo da Vinci exhibition. It uses 3D reconstruction techniques and includes critical and historiographical content, allowing users to study the masterpiece up close. The app is free and available on Valve Index, HTC Vive, iOS, and Android. These apps demonstrate how virtual reality can provide unprecedented access to iconic artworks and archaeological sites.
