Three Southeast Asian artists named finalists for Joseph Balestier Award for Freedom of Art

Three Southeast Asian artists have been selected as finalists for the 2017 Joseph Balestier Award for the Freedom of Art. The award, which carries a $15,000 USD prize, honors individuals from the region who demonstrate commitment to liberty and freedom of expression through their creative practice. Indonesian performance artist Arahmaiani and Myanmar artists Aye Ko and Chaw Ei Thein comprise the shortlist. A jury panel including Ute Meta Bauer of Singapore's Centre for Contemporary Art, Zoe Butt from The Factory Contemporary Art Centre in Ho Chi Minh City, and independent curator Enin Supriyanto will determine the winner. The announcement will be made on January 10 by U.S. Ambassador to Singapore Kirk Wagar and Art Stage Singapore founder Lorenzo Rudolf. Art Stage Singapore and the U.S. Embassy Singapore jointly administer the award program.
