Three Photographers at Paris Venues: Trivier, Almeida, Culmann
The Maison européenne de la photographie in Paris presents Marc Trivier's retrospective 'Photographies 1980-2010' from February 9 to April 3, 2011. Trivier, a purist of black-and-white photography, juxtaposes stark images of livestock (cows, pigs) and portraits of intellectuals such as Michel Foucault (1984), Nathalie Sarraute (1983), and Samuel Beckett (1983). His series on slaughterhouses includes the disturbing 'Cochon aveugle' (1980) and 'Abattoir V'. Concurrently, the gallery Les Filles du calvaire exhibits Helena Almeida's recent works from March 18 to May 7, 2011. Almeida, originally a painter, transitioned to black-and-white photography in 1970, exploring spatiality and the body. Her series 'Ouve-me' (1979) critiques censorship under Portugal's regime. She is always photographed by her husband, never showing her face, to achieve universality. At the pavillon carré de Baudouin, Olivier Culmann's 'Watchers' runs from April 1 to June 11, 2011. Culmann, inspired by 9/11, photographs people watching television across the globe—from Morocco to India, the US to China—capturing their postures and environments with detailed captions that restore individuality.
