Three NYC Gallery Exhibitions Reviewed: Schnabel at PaceWildenstein, Heffernan at P.P.O.W., Harrison at Paul Sharpe
In New York City's Chelsea and Tribeca, three exhibitions are currently on display, each presenting unique painting techniques. At PaceWildenstein (534 W. 25th Street), Julian Schnabel's "New Indian Paintings and Selected Sculpture" will be available until November 15, showcasing large paintings influenced by early 20th-century Native American portraits and sculptures from the 1980s. Critics have labeled his artwork as slow and unoriginal. Julie Heffernan's "New Paintings" at P.P.O.W. (555 W. 25th Street) is open until November 8, featuring magical realist allegories with "genuine intensity." Lastly, Laura Harrison's first exhibition, "Building Portraits: Surface and Space in Landmark Structures," at Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art (86 Walker Street) runs until November 1, displaying minimalistic architectural paintings. Coverage of all exhibitions appeared in the New York Sun on October 23, 2003.
