Three New York exhibitions explore automotive influence in contemporary sculpture
In May and June 2009, three exhibitions in New York emphasized the artistic value of automobiles. At L & M Gallery, John Chamberlain presented early creations, transforming steel components into unique assemblages, with works dating back to 1961. Chakaia Booker showcased her sculptures made from recycled tires at Marlborough Chelsea, reflecting her basket-making skills through woven designs. Meanwhile, Dirk Skreber's display at Friedrich Petzel Gallery featured sculptures of cars wrapped around poles, simulating 50 mph collisions, and referencing crash test sites. The exhibitions were influenced by the Finish Fetish movement from Los Angeles and BMW's artist commissioning initiative from 1975. Chamberlain's show was from May 5 to July 10, Booker's from April 30 to May 30, and Skreber's from May 9 to June 27, all located in Manhattan.
