Three New Art Books Spotlight Female Artists
Contrasto has released two new Fotonote monographs on Mary Ellen Mark and Sophie Calle, while Dario Cimorelli Editore published Marina Caneve's "Io sono contemporaneamente." The Mary Ellen Mark volume, introduced by Caroline Bénichou, features her social portraiture straddling reportage and documentary photography, including several images taken in Italy. The Sophie Calle book, with text by Clément Chéroux, explores the French artist's use of photography to reveal the intimate, often focusing on death; it is structured as an encyclopedic dictionary of her works. Marina Caneve's "Io sono contemporaneamente" centers on the theme of boundaries, with photographs of Savignano sul Rubicone from her project _CONFINE_. The book includes double portraits of youths inspired by Piero della Francesca and explorations of the Biblioteca Pesaresi, with texts by the artist and an institutional essay. All three titles were published in 2024.
