Three Must-See Summer Exhibitions on Ancient Greece
Intesa Sanpaolo's vast collection of Attic and Magna Graecia ceramics, permanently housed at Gallerie d'Italia – Palazzo Leoni Montanari in Vicenza, is showcased through rotating thematic displays under the project "Il Tempo dell'Antico." One such exhibition, "Il viaggio dell'eroe" (The Hero's Journey), is currently on view at the Pinacoteca Agnelli in Turin, marking the museum's first foray into archaeology. The show features around thirty works from the bank's collection of 522 ceramics, tracing the narratives of Greek heroes like Heracles, Theseus, and Homer's Achilles, as well as the historical journey of the vases from Athens to Lucania and Apulia. The collection originated with Giuseppe Caputi, an archdeacon who began acquiring figured vases around 1830 from excavations in Ruvo di Puglia. Meanwhile, at the Grande Palestra of the Pompeii excavations, "Pompei e i Greci" presents six hundred artifacts revealing unknown aspects of the Vesuvian city in relation to the Greek Mediterranean, organized by Electa. This exhibition is part of a broader project involving the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN), which will host "Amori Divini" starting in June, featuring a rich selection of Greek and Magna Graecia vases from its collection, with a planned reinstallation in 2018.
