Three Modernist Sites Added to UNESCO World Heritage List
UNESCO has added three 20th-century modernist architectural ensembles to its World Heritage List: Alvar Aalto's works in Finland, the modernist city center of Gdynia in Poland, and the Soviet-era architecture of Tashkent in Uzbekistan. The additions were announced at the close of the annual session, which added 25 new sites total. Finland's designation covers 13 buildings by Alvar Aalto, Aino Marsio-Aalto, and Elissa Aalto, built between 1928 and 1988, including the Aalto House, Studio Aalto, Finlandia Hall, and the National Pensions Institute in Helsinki. Gdynia's listing includes interwar streets and buildings that exemplify modernist planning for the Polish port city. Tashkent's ten buildings, constructed from the 1960s to early 1990s after the 1966 earthquake, feature Soviet-era planning blended with Central Asian traditions. Uzbekistan becomes the first Central Asian country recognized for 20th-century architectural heritage, and these are the youngest structures on the list.
