Three Michelangelo Pietàs United in Florence Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-27

For the first time, three Michelangelo Pietàs are brought together in an exhibition titled "Non vi si pensa quanto sangue costa" at the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Florence, from February 24 to August 1, 2022. The show features the original Pietà Bandini (recently restored), and plaster casts of the Vatican Pietà and the Rondanini Pietà from the Vatican Museums. The exhibition is organized for the Mediterranean Frontier of Peace 2022 meeting, involving Pope Francis, and is curated by Barbara Jatta, Sergio Risaliti, Claudio Salsi, and Timothy Verdon. The Pietà Bandini, begun in 1547 and never finished, shows signs of Michelangelo's hammer blows. The Rondanini Pietà, dated 1552–1553, was found in his studio after his death. The exhibition will move to Milan's Palazzo Reale in autumn 2022.
