Three Los Angeles exhibitions examine feminist art through Guerrilla Girls, Riot Grrl, and contemporary sculpture

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Back in early 2015, the LA area hosted three noteworthy exhibitions that focused on feminist art from different angles. From January 20 to May 17, Pomona College Museum of Art showcased 'Guerrilla Girls: Art in Action,' featuring works from the anonymous activist group, including pieces by founding member Käthe Kollwitz. Over at the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach, 'Alien She' ran from February 15 to May 24, exploring the Riot Grrl movement's influence on visual art with zines and Miranda July’s Big Miss Moviola project (1995-2003). In Downtown LA, François Ghebaly Gallery displayed 'SOGTFO' from February 28 to April 4, featuring sculptures by five women artists. Additionally, I took part in an Art+Feminism Wikipedia edit-a-thon at Whittier College, focusing on Hannah Höch. Together, these exhibitions highlighted the ongoing challenges of recognizing women’s contributions to art.
