Three Italian Photographers Named World Press Photo 2019 Finalists
Marco Gualazzini, Lorenzo Tugnoli, and Daniele Volpe are among the finalists for the World Press Photo 2019 competition, organized by the Dutch foundation since 1955. Gualazzini, a contributor to the Italian agency Contrasto, competes for World Press Photo of the Year with an image from his reportage on the Lake Chad crisis. The photograph depicts orphaned children, mostly Nigerian refugees, living in Quranic schools and begging during the day, known as Almajiri. Tugnoli is a finalist for the new World Press Photo Story of the Year category with his reportage on the crisis in Yemen, documenting refugee camps, hospitals, and front lines. Volpe is a finalist in the General News category. The winners will be announced in Amsterdam on April 11, 2019. The jury reviewed 78,801 photographs from 4,738 photographers across 129 countries. Last year's winner was Ronaldo Schemidt. The final exhibition will be held in Turin from September 28 to November 17, 2019, hosted for the third time at the former Borsa Valori.
