Three exhibitions across Umbria celebrate Mimmo Paladino's career
The Umbria region dedicates three simultaneous exhibitions to Mimmo Paladino (born 1948 in Paduli), spanning Perugia, Gubbio, and Spoleto. At Perugia's Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria, the show focuses on historical works from 1977 onward, tracing his shift from abstraction to a return to painting, exemplified by 'Silenzioso, mi ritiro a dipingere un quadro.' The exhibition includes pieces referencing the 1964 Venice Biennale, Pop Art, and New Dada, as well as works from his Transavanguardia period, notably 'Lampeggiante' from Aperto 80 curated by Achille Bonito Oliva and Harald Szeemann. A special intervention sees Paladino temporarily replace Beato Angelico's work with his own 'D'après Beato Angelico' in room 10. At Palazzo Ducale in Gubbio, nine works from 2007 to 2025 showcase his ongoing visual language, combining classical forms with contemporary references. At Spoleto's Rocca Albornoz, two large installations are on view: 'Dormienti,' 32 terracotta sculptures evoking sleep and rest, accompanied by a Brian Eno soundtrack from a 1998 London show, and a 2006 installation using charred remnants of sculptures from Paladino's film 'Quijote,' recast in aluminum. Paladino collaborated with curators Costantino D'Orazio and Aurora Roscini Vitali on the selection, including many previously unseen or rarely exhibited works.
