Three Design Projects Celebrate Milan During Salone del Mobile 2018
During the 2018 Salone del Mobile, three design projects expressed love for Milan. Cristina Celestino customized a historic 1928 tram into a mobile cinema called Cinema Corallo, circulating in the Brera district. The tram features pastel sofas, floral-print carpets and curtains, and is divided into a foyer and a screening room with poufs inspired by antique jewelry boxes. At the Brera Design Apartment (via Palermo 1), twelve designers created souvenirs: Sara Ricciardi designed temporary tattoos with motifs from Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II's pavement, while Stories_of_Italy reworked the MM metro logo by Albini into carved trivets. At concept store Wait and See, illustrator Olimpia Zagnoli launched The Queen of Milano merchandise (t-shirts, scarves, mugs, pens) featuring a woman crowned with a tiara shaped like the Duomo. Zagnoli, who works for the New York Times, New Yorker, Repubblica, and Taschen, described Milan as a feminine personality: discreet, self-confident, and hospitable.
