Three Chelsea exhibitions in October 2012 foreshadowed Hurricane Sandy with disaster-themed installations

In October 2012, three Chelsea galleries presented exhibitions focused on disasters, creating an eerie prelude to Hurricane Sandy's arrival. At Lehman Maupin Gallery, Japanese artist Mr. presented 'Metamorphosis: Give me Your Wings,' an installation responding to Japan's 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The space was filled with furniture, toys, books, and teen magazines, with walls covered in graffiti and Manga-style paintings. Thomas Hirschhorn's 'Concordia, Concordia' at Gladstone Gallery commemorated the Costa Concordia cruise ship sinking off Italy's coast.
