Three-artist exhibition 'Very Long Fingers' explores distorted figures at Simone Subal Gallery

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Between November 1 and December 20, 2015, the Simone Subal Gallery in New York showcased 'Very Long Fingers,' which included 14 pieces from artists Julien Bismuth, Tomasz Kowalski, and Autumn Ramsey. Bismuth contributed two silent videos: 'La Variation Continue' (2013) and 'Willy Billy' (2013). Kowalski's work featured collages from 2015, including '& (novelty).' Ramsey's paintings, like 'Red Sphinx' (2013) and 'Orange Shape' (2014), delved into anthropomorphic themes. The exhibition created a surreal ambiance with clown and animal motifs, raising inquiries about human identity. The title alluded to elongated fingers, while the artworks manipulated scale and perspective, echoing Joan Jonas's 1969 performance 'Mirror Piece I' and its explorations of perception.
