Three Alternative Art Spaces in Toulouse: Déjean, Arcas, Hortala
The article reviews three exhibitions in and around Toulouse, France, highlighting the challenges of provincial venues overshadowed by major institutions. At BBB (Bond de la Baleine à Bosse), Daniel Déjean presented acrylic paintings on plastic films and bags, inspired by a trip to New Mexico, featuring desert landscapes, dancers, and truncated bodies. At ALaPlage, Stéphane Arcas (b. 1970) showed provocative works including adult-themed cartoons and a video titled 'Cabine de plage' projected on a veil. At Espace des arts in Colomiers, works by Philippe Hortala (1960-1998) from 1986 depicted apocalyptic interiors with newspapers, televisions, and earthquakes, marking a transitional period in his oeuvre.
