Three African Artists Explore Gender, Identity and Digital Culture at QUAD Derby Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-20

The exhibition 'Here, There and Everywhere' at QUAD in Derby showcases the works of three African artists chosen via an open call. Sipho Gongxeka, a photographer from South Africa, features large-format portraits from his 2018 series 'House of Realness,' which portray black queer individuals in urban settings, shedding light on LGBTQI+ life in South Africa. Anthony Bila presents 'the power(lessness) of (n)one' (2021), a collection of black-and-white photographs and installations that delve into themes of freedom and limitation shaped by lockdown experiences. Additionally, Nigerian artist Uzoma Chidumaga Orji critiques the effects of social media on artists in his work 'Welcome to Instaland' (2021). This exhibition runs from May 17 to September 5 and is part of Remark, in partnership with BACKLIT, addressing various socio-political themes through diverse artistic expressions.
