Thomaz Farkas Centenary Exhibition at MIS-CE Explores Brazil Through His Photographic Gaze
A centenary exhibition honoring photographer and filmmaker Thomaz Farkas (1924-2011) is on view at MIS-CE. Curated to highlight the affection present in his images, the show spans three floors and traces his journey to understand and present Brazil to Brazilians, beginning when he was 18. His work, which navigates between classical and modern photography, utilized image-making to explore the country's deep interior. The exhibition includes a collection of his photographs from various seminal series: modernist essays, surrealist works with friends from the Polytechnic School, studies of Brasília before and during its inauguration, dance, and the Brazilian Northeast. A dedicated library section displays emblematic books and associated personal objects from the recently arrived Biblioteca Marly Mariano e Thomaz Farkas, revealing dedications, notes, and newspaper clippings. An immersive room, created by Wellington Gadelha and his team, offers an audiovisual tribute. The exhibition 'Thomaz Farkas – A beleza diante dos olhos' runs until November 21, with free admission. Visiting hours are Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 5:30pm, and Fridays to Sundays from 1pm to 7:30pm.
