Thomas Schütte's Singular Vision at Galerie Pietro Sparta, Chagny

exhibition · 2026-04-23

From November 20, 2009, to January 19, 2010, Galerie Pietro Sparta in Chagny showcases an exhibition by Thomas Schütte. Since the late 1970s, Schütte has set himself apart by moving away from formalist and historicist approaches. His piece 'Grosse Mauer' (1977) signifies a break from the influence of his mentor, Gerhard Richter. Featured works include 'Block Heads' (2009), which consists of twelve ceramic heads mounted on industrial bases, and 'Me Memorial' (2009), a blend of watercolors and a ceramic self-portrait. Additionally, 'Good and Bad' presents two busts that echo earlier creations. Schütte's models, such as the 'Maison de vacances pour terroristes,' are designed to be autonomous yet are meant for full-scale execution. Meanwhile, 'Hindsight,' curated by Lynne Cooke, is on view at the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid until May 17.
