Thomas Ruff transforms physics and math into hypnotic images at Lia Rumma Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-26

In 2025, Galleria Lia Rumma in Milan will host Thomas Ruff's sixth solo exhibition, which will occupy three floors and showcase seven series from the 2000s to the present. This exhibition delves into the nature of images through various experiments, models, and archival materials. On the ground floor, visitors will find 'untitled#' (2022) and 'expériences lumineuses' (2024), which incorporate silver wire coils and light refractions. The first floor displays 'd.o.pe,' inspired by Aldous Huxley’s The Doors of Perception, alongside 'zycles,' featuring 19th-century illustrations. The second floor presents 'photograms,' 'press++,' and a piece from 'nudes,' addressing themes of anonymity and representation. Ruff, a prominent member of the Düsseldorf School, has been redefining photographic norms since the 1980s, reinforcing his partnership with Lia Rumma.
