Thomas Nozkowski's Pace Gallery exhibition criticized for pairing paintings with after-drawings
From October 22 to December 4, 2010, The Pace Gallery in New York City showcased an exhibition by Thomas Nozkowski, featuring 18 oil paintings on paper alongside drawings. At 66 years old, Nozkowski produced sketches of finished works on Magnani Pescia paper, each measuring just under nine by ten inches, to achieve aesthetic distance. This exhibition celebrated Pace's fiftieth anniversary in the Bartolomi space. Critics criticized the forced juxtaposition of paintings and drawings, labeling it a "dog's dinner" of comparisons, and contrasted it with Nozkowski's 2009 exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada. He also expressed worries about falling into a signature style trap during an interview, with comparisons drawn to Brice Marden's show at Matthew Marks Gallery and historical influences.
